Mormons believe in the crucifixion of Jesus and feel it was for the forgiveness of their sins just as all Christians do. They feel they must follow the ways of Jesus Christ and God in order to live wonderful lives and be with the heavenly father at the end of their lives.
The debate over whether Mormons are Christians or not has been long lived amongst all Christianity. Other Christian religions believe Mormons are not indeed Christians while others accept the concept. To Mormons, the Bible is considered only as scriptures, unlike most Christianity. They also have their own Bible and Scriptures of the LDS Church (Church of Latter Day Saints.) Mormons have their own baptism just as other Christian religions do. Usually, neither religion will accept the others baptism. They also believe in different traditions such as wearing Mormon underwear.
How Are Mormons Christians?
Historically, Mormons had preferred to be called “Saints” and felt Christianity had several differences and beliefs to the faith of the LDS Church. However, in the recent years, the LDS Church has spent much time publicizing their movement of the LDS Church into the Christian mainstream. This allows for the elimination of being considered a cult as well as connecting with other Christian religions.
During the 1820’s, Mormons shared strong similarities with elements to some aspects of 19th century Christianity. Mormons believed that God restored original Christianity taught by Jesus. They taught that God the Father, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit were three different beings. In traditional Christianity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are conceived to be a unity of three persons as one divine being. Mormons share Christianity with the belief that the object of worship is three distinct persons, but not as one unity.
Mormons and Jesus Christ
Mormons distinctly believe they are Christians since their Church bears the name of Jesus Christ, but do not believe in the traditional Jesus Christ as in the Bible. They believe in a Jesus Christ that was introduced to Joseph Smith in the year 1820. Joseph was the creator of the Mormon religion back in 1820. Many of their beliefs in Jesus Christ have many similarities to Christian beliefs, but differ on how Jesus came about. Therefore Mormons feel they are not true Christians, but are indeed Christians with beliefs in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
Mormons and God
To Mormons, God is not the God of the Bible, but a man who became God. Mormons believe that God himself was once a child as well as someone whom climbed his way up to “Godhood.” They feel he is now an immortal flesh bodied being just like humans. According to the Bible, God was never man but a spirit. Furthermore, true Christianity feels God is eternal and has always been. Christianity believes that God was never a human. While many aspects of God the Father are quite similar to both religions, such as the Ten Commandments, the basics of existence differ significantly. Therefore, many Mormons beliefs and traditions carry very similar aspects and actions to Christianity, just in different ways. So if you ask “Are Mormons Christians,” it is up to each person to decide for themselves.
